Over the past couple days, I found that I couldn't get my FreeNAS box hard drives to go into Standby mode (spin down) any more. (I think my next NAS will be a Synology box.) Like disk power management, something called a cache device, a log device, and need flags/options for ZFS that I may need to set. Setting everything else up has been fine. Turns out you can just leave this blank, but there was no button to skip. It correctly absorbed my ZFS volume, but then later asked me about Active Directory/LDAP/etc. There's a setup wizard, but I found it a bit confusing. The web login name is "root" (and not "admin", like it was previously.) It turned out that the install process is quite slow and has no way of indicating that it is still working.Īfter it finished, I connected to the DHCP address it had been given and typed in the new password that I had set in the setup. The first time I tried the installation, it looked like it had hung. Lesson: Make note of all your settings before upgrading.
When running the installer, it gives an option to Install/Upgrade, but don't be deceived, this installer is only able to upgrade you if you are running Freenas 9.3 or later (or a 9.3 beta). Then I copied the FreeNAS 9.3 ISO to a different USB stick using the recommended software on their site. Finally got around to upgrading my Freenas box from 8.3 to 9.3 - Didn't go as well as I had expected, but wasn't too bad, either.įirst thing I did was backup the USB stick which held the 8.3 install.
